This will be a long comment with no TLDR if you don't want to read it don't. I really don't blame you I went through welding school at 18 years old, it was a really good choice, It was a non-profit welding school I learned how to weld pipe in 2014 for 6,500$, a actual steal, I got all my tools I needed and everything included in that price, absolutely un-beatable. I went straight out of school working maintenance for a steel mill as a pipe welder, it was one of the worst paying pipe contractors in the USA I was making 22.50, but considering I live in Arkansas, great money, that's not a lie and also they were super chill with me being new and I learned a lot of stuff without fear of welding "one bad weld" and being let go, I also was living at home and took a couple voluntary layoffs so people supporting family's didn't have to worry. I believe it was January or February of 2015, I was on a voluntary layoff stint, during this time I was essentially a logger local guy logged for rough cut lumber for the pallet industry he paid me by the tree and honestly I made just as much as I did welding working for him because commission based work was my area to be in, when I was at work I worked, I had met a girl in December of 2015 we started dating and her room mate bailed on her she lived in the city I wanted to live in and it was still a little shorter of a drive to my steel mill so I moved in with her, I called my contractor and they told me to come re-weld test the next day, and it was really weird, there was only one place in the whole facility with stainless pipes, but they told me I had to re-do a regular pipe test, then do a stainless tube test, I agreed. Went in did my regular pipe test, then they told me to do the stainless tube test, when I grabbed a purge hose and purged the inside of the stainless tube the guy watching my tube test had this kinda disgusted look on his face, most people in this area probably don't know you have to purge the inside of stainless tubes but I knew, welded the joints cut my stuff for a bend and they bent flawlessly, the guy giving me my test looked at all of them and then told me to come talk to the company weld inspector. He looked at all my bent test pieces and said they looked immaculate but he also seemed troubled, he said hey come in tomorrow at the plant at 6AM. I roll up next day 6AM get to the shop and they said "hey you need to go talk to the superintendent" I go talk to him and once again most disgusted look on his face "Hey steel and oil crashed last night I don't know how to say this but the steel plant laid off 65% of their workers and we were told to lay off 85% of ours so I guess you get where I'm going with this" Ended up where I am now, I am now a multi trade worker, I earn 0 extra money for knowing multiple trades, I worked 80-100hrs a week to keep the place I work now open 2015-2018 and guess what? No one gives one absolute shit, it is just like the warehouse worker said, no one cares in the slightest bit, I worked what should had been the best years of my life away, I did a 16 hour shift on my 21st birthday. I wasn't able to actually use my vacation the first 3 years I worked for my company because If I was gone they couldn't meet their goals. I didn't call in and was never late for 5 years at the job I work now, and all that really did was make them lean on me more. There's people with the highest job title of my secondary trade "highest pay level" that don't even have to do said trade because every time they do they screw it up, so I have to do that trade also a lot of the time while I earn the same money being at the highest level in two separate trades. You are 100% correct in what you are saying do your own thing if you are a hard worker, corporations are only beneficial to lazy people now and that includes the management. The next 2008 is going to be the absolute collapse of work places, eventually enough of the good people will do their own thing and profits for companies will fall to all time lows and honestly it's already happening. Even where I work we produced 250% more prior to 2020 people are tired of it. Honestly I'd love to see current day management walk into a 1970's workplace with todays mentality "Oh the turnover rate is on 2% that means we are paying way to much" "Oh most of the staff as been here 10-30 years that's a big problem stuffs not being ran profitable here" It's just wild to me, that strain to get even 1% higher profits each quarter even if the economy isn't reflecting that, they will do anything to profit for a quarter, even if that solution causes them to lose probably what could had been 50% higher profits at the end of the year, by god if we lost 5% one quarter even if we could be 50% up for the year that's a huge problem 5% loss in quarter is a way bigger issue to them at least.
